HISTORY
On January 7, 1934, the First Presbyterian Church ofSumter reported that a Sunday school was being
organized in Jordan School for the people of the community.
Preaching services were held once a month for a number of years. After a brief interruption by World War II, on a cold, wintery day in January 1947, Rev. E. Bert Wilkinson was elected "outpost pastor" by the session of First Presbyterian Church. The ministry was placed under his care.
The church met in Mr. S.A. Tisdale's store building at the corner of Liberty street and Alice Drive until March 1950. With the help of substantial gifts by W.B. Burns, Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Pitts Thompson, the Pitts Memorial Educational Building was dedicated in April 1950 at the Church's current location.
Harmony Presbytery officially organized the "Pitts Memorial Chapel" on October 22, 1950. The name "Pitts Presbyterian Church" was selected at a congregational meeting held in October 1951; the Rev. E. Bert Wilkinson was called as pastor at the time.
In the fall of 1952 a wing was added to accommodate the increased members attending the Sunday School. The current sanctuary was dedicated in April 1955 and a manse was constructed in 1956. A large extension was built by members of the Ruth Mclaurin Adult Bible Class and dedicated in 1972.
In 1991 the Church changed it's name to "Swan Lake Presbyterian Church" to better define its location in the city and to enhance it's visibility to those seeking a new Church home.
The Church continues to provide a genuine, vital witness to the Grace and Truth of God through Jesus Christ in the Sumter community and beyond.
